SRA Student Story: Sarah Harmer

Sarah Harmer, one of SRA's graduates now a highly successful professional makeup artistSarah Harmer is passionate about helping people look and feel extraordinary. It is this passion that has driven her successful 13 year career as a beauty therapist and has led Sarah to become a professional makeup artist.

With a desire to take on an exciting new challenge and explore her creative side, Sarah enrolled at SRA in February 2015.

“I always wanted to become a qualified professional makeup artist. As well as offering my clients beauty treatments, I wanted to create beautiful hair and makeup for special occasions, especially weddings,” says Sarah.

She enrolled at SRA after an inspiring chance encounter with Samala Robinson, founder and director of the academy.

“Samala was so encouraging and helpful. With her passion for makeup, I knew SRA was the best place to learn to become a makeup artist.”

With the support of her family and friends Sarah completed a 10 week Certificate in Bridal and Special Events Makeup.

“The educators were amazing and helped me achieve my goals. I now have complete confidence as a professional makeup artist and I am eager to learn more.”

In addition to loving working with the SRA tutors, Sarah enjoyed using Samala Cosmetics during her training.

“The Samala Cosmetics range is stunning to work with – I loved learning how to use these amazing professional products.”

One of the highlights of Sarah’s career as a makeup artist to date has been to work with Emily Chalk of Live Love Laugh Photography who is a freelance photographer for Next Magazine.

“I got the opportunity to do a wedding photo shoot with Emily through SRA and learnt so much!”

Living and working in Waiuku near several wedding venues is an ideal location for Sarah. However, her beauty therapy and makeup appointments take her throughout Auckland.

Sarah decided to follow her passion for beauty therapy after years of working in an office job and has not looked back, especially now she is a professional makeup artist.

“I really want a substantial part of my career to be as a professional makeup artist. I love making an everyday woman feel elegant, beautiful and amazing for her special day – whether it’s a bride or a girl going to a school ball.

“Being able to help people feel fabulous about themselves is wonderful.”

Sarah has the following advice for aspiring makeup artists:
“Do what makes you happy, follow your dreams and make a life you want to lead. Contact the amazing staff at SRA – you won't regret it!”
