SRA Student Story: Jade Valamaka

Jade Valamaka, one of SRA's graduates now a highly successful professional makeup artist

Why did you choose Makeup as a career?

Makeup for me has always been therapeutic. I've always loved the variety of ways makeup can be used with limitless boundaries, making it different for everyone. I decided on pursuing makeup as a career because I love how every experience is different, I have the ability to be creative every day and I have the freedom to do something different so I never have to feel trapped in my career.

Why did you choose SRA as an education provider?

SRA seemed to tick all my boxes. I researched around and felt that SRA offered me everything I needed. The atmosphere and people that were going to be around me every day was an important factor in my decision and after reading nothing but good things about the academy, the tutors and previous students' experiences, I knew that SRA was the place for me.

Tell us about your experience at SRA.

I have nothing but good memories from my experience at SRA. The atmosphere was so welcoming. No matter who you went to, or where you went, you never felt like you were intruding. The tutors are some of the most amazing and supportive people, I still continue to learn and be inspired by them to this day. The people in my class were the same, we were all super supportive and did nothing but inspire and learn from each other. I don't think I could have picked a better group of people to go through this experience with.

What was the highlight while studying full time with us?

I don't think I could narrow it down to just one highlight from the experience because in all honesty the whole thing was a highlight for me and I'm so thankful to everyone who helped get me to where I am today.

What have you achieved so far? (Career after study)

Graduating with Excellence from SRA has set me up with so many amazing opportunities already in my career. I've had the opportunity to be a part of the Samala Cosmetics Creative Team and worked on NZFW 2016, I have had people reach out to me for private booking for balls and events and I was able to get my first job in the makeup industry working for Benefit Cosmetics only one month after graduating.

What is next for you? (Goal for the next 5yrs)

My hope is to continue to learn and grow as a makeup artist and in the industry. I'm aiming to work my way up in terms of my position in my career. In terms of my dream goal hopefully there might be something in the works of a collaboration or having my own cosmetics line or product.
